• Overview of Washington West

Washington West Elementary School is one of two elementary schools in the Olean City School District.  Our school serves over 500 students attending preschool through third-grade classes that facilitate academic growth and social responsibility.  School colors are red and gold, and we are the “husky pups!”

Sound instructional offerings to meet the needs of our diverse student population include Title I reading, resource room, speech, and self-contained special education classrooms with mainstreaming opportunities.

All students are unique and may encounter barriers to the learning process as they grow and develop.  Classroom teachers may refer students with academic, social, emotional or behavioral issues to our Instructional Support Team (IST).   Our Instructional Support Team includes the principal, counselor, psychologist and teachers—classroom, speech, and reading.   Our team provides a proactive approach to problem solving, helpful intervention for students in a timely manner, support and communication.

Special weekly classes include library, music and physical education lessons.  There is a 20-workstation computer lab available for instruction in all grades with reading, word processing, Internet access for research, and other specialized, developmentally appropriate software.  Each classroom also has a mini-lab to incorporate technology into daily teacher instruction.

With changes to the physical building and with a variety of programs, dedicated personnel and supportive parents/guardians, Washington West is a warm, welcoming environment for learning.
