What Students Learn in 2nd Grade
Math: This year we will review basic facts through 12 and complete the basic facts through 18. Please practice these at home as much as possible. Then we will move on to 2-column and 3 column addition and subtraction with and without regrouping. We will also focus on graphing, fractions, measurement, time (in 5 minute intervals), and money. Problem solving and using beginning algebraic thinking will also be emphasized.
Reading: The stories we read during Reading will be broken into themes. In addition to the stories we read in class we will also study poetry. Comprehension (making meaning and understanding as you read) and story elements will be worked on in depth. Appropriate expression and fluency during oral reading will be stressed. Sight word recognition will continue and reading vocabulary will begin.
Phonics: In addition to long and short vowel sounds we will also study vowel combinations, consonant blends, diphthongs, digraphs, prefixes, suffixes, special endings like -s and -es, and correct use of apostrophes.
Writing: We will continue creative writing emphasizing using logical order, adding details, and character development. We will also learn about writing research reports on non-fiction topics and written response assignments.
Grammar: We will learn about proper sentence structure, punctuation, nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs. We will practice using correct grammar in our everyday speech and in writing assignments.
Spelling: Our spelling words will come from the stories we read each week and from our weekly Phonics themes. The spelling list will be sent home on Mondays in the Homework Folder.
Science: We will study weather, plants and animals, magnets, matter, and measurement.
Social Studies: We will focus on communities (especially the three types: urban, suburban, and rural), map skills, continents, oceans, Washington D.C., and holidays.
