Classroom GuidanceAll classrooms at Washington West Elementary School have the option to host 6-session developmental guidance programs, and, as always, it is an absolute pleasure to work with so many students as they build crucial social and coping skills that will carry them through their academic years - and beyond! Students at all grade levels can participate in classroom discussions, small group activities, role plays and games, reading and writing stories, and discussions of videos. Our Kindergartners can take part in a unit with Mrs. Strong which explores making and keeping friends. We'll discuss what makes a good friend, using kind words, and understanding the importance of apologizing. Our First Graders explore handling difficult feelings, getting help when needed to manage those feelings, and recognizing others' feelings and needs in order to build respectful connections. Our Second Graders learn about the importance of a positive reputation through the identification of their many and varied positive qualities - kindness, humor, compassion, a helpful nature...and how to be accepting of the differences that make us all so special! Our Third Graders can build on the skills of acceptance and kindness by recognizing their role as leaders among their schoolmates, modeling positive behaviors and displaying their ability to handle conflict and support one another in all areas of their school. All children benefit from learning skills that help them become successful learners, understanding friends, effective communicators, creative problem-solvers, and responsible citizens. It is our hope at Washington West Elementary School that classroom guidance programs can provide support for those goals.
